The Divine Pymander of Hermes Mercurius Trismegistus edition by Hermes Mercurius Trismegistus John Everard Religion Spirituality eBooks

About Book
This is an early modern translation of a central text of the Hermetic canon, the Divine Pymander.
The Divine Pymander The Hermetica are Greek wisdom texts from the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE, mostly presented as dialogues in which a teacher, generally identified with Hermes Trismegistus or "thrice-greatest Hermes", enlightens a disciple. The texts discuss the nature of the divine, mind, nature and the cosmos some touch upon alchemy, astrology and related concepts.
This Book may justly challenge the first place for antiquity, from all the Books in the World, being written some hundreds of years before Moses his time, as I shall endeavour to make good. The Original (as far as is known to us) is Arabic, and several Translations thereof have been published, as Greek, Latin, French, Dutch, etc., but never English before. It is pity
the Learned Translator [Dr. Everard] had not lived, and received himself, the honour, and thanks due to him from the Englishmen for his good will to, and pains for them, in translating a Book of such infinite worth, out of the Original, into their Mother-tongue.
Concerning the Author of the Book itself, Four things are considerable, viz., His Name, Learning, Country, and Time.

I have had this book since April, 2010, and I've read it three times. It reads like Holy Scripture (the Book of Job, for instance). And similarly, it reads somewhat like Plato's dialogues. Who really knows if any of the revelations in The Divine Pymander are true? But, I myself believe, that I have read and learned something of a spiritual nature. The translation is in old English (taken from the Arabic) and has a number of archaic words; you'll have to read the text slow and have access to an old dictionary. It would also help the reader if they had read other esoteric texts and had also read commentaries on them. Terms like "The Seven Governors in their Circles" actually refers to seven planets. (Manly P. Hall's "Secret Teachings of All Ages" is an excellent reference). This version published by Forgotten Books has plenty of typos. But, for the ridiculously reasonable price asked for the book, the typos can be overlooked. Besides, you can read the entire text of this book on their website for free. The Divine Pymander of Hermes Mercurius Trismegistus edition by Hermes Mercurius Trismegistus John Everard Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Hargrave Jennings & J.F. (?) wrote interesting Introductions exploring the possible history of this book--as translated by Dr. Everard (no other info. on him given). It includes an index and "notes" by an unknown editor. The front matter refers to 2 Hermes 1. 2000 B.C.E. & 2. somewhat C.E. But, the text seems to reflect early Christian & Gnostic thinking (some of which was later deemed heretical) rather than a translation of very ancient texts (e.g. Pritchard's works-- The Ancient Near East (Volume II) A New Anthology of Texts and Pictures). It takes the form (mostly) as dialogs but don't expect much alchemy (e.g. Corpus Hermeticum) in it--though it's published by Wizard! As an old book it has anachronisms i.e. the indivisibility of water (as one of the 4 elements) as well as the strange statement p. 47 "The South where the sun ariseth." It is heavily dualistic, paternalistic, & monotheistic--stressing the Good & Truth of the male God (ignoring the plethora of ancient Egyptian gods & goddesses) vs. the evil & falsehood of the Earth realm & gives an apologetic for the existence of God the Creator. It may be an ancient (perhaps 100-200 C. E.) pseudoepigraphic text but cannot IMHO have predated Christianity. Buddhists will not appreciate much of the text--mostly unsupported statements. It does little for me, but it might strike a chord for you--depending upon your religious/spiritual persuasion. I'd rather read the Upanishads (The Principal Upanishads) or works of Longchen Rabjam (The Precious Treasury of Pith Instructions (The Seven Treasuries Series)) myself. Different strokes...

During and after reading this book, I now know where all the information in the Bible came from. Fascinating reading.
Vert deep and one would need to read this many times.
